Everything Must Be Dark

Phone, laptop, IDE, browser, note-taking app, messaging app. If there’s a dark mode toggle, I’m flipping it.

It’s not for any scientific reason. I just think it looks good.

Light text on a dark background has this feeling of “I’m doing something serious.” White background with black text feels like staring at a Word document. Totally subjective, but a lot of people seem to feel the same way.

Anyone who’s swapped in an SSD knows the feeling — boot time goes from a minute to ten seconds, apps launch instantly, the whole computer feels like a different machine.

The Old Days

A decade ago, leaving the house meant carrying a pile of cables. One Micro USB for the phone, a Mini USB for the camera, a barrel plug charger for the laptop, an HDMI for the external monitor, and a USB-A flash drive. Every cable looked different, and borrowing one from someone was never straightforward.

Now a single USB-C cable handles most of it. Charging, file transfers, display output, audio — all through the same port.

The Short Answer

OLED looks gorgeous — high contrast, fast response, deep blacks. But it’s pricier and has burn-in risk. LCD is cheaper and more durable, but blacks look grayish and viewing angles aren’t as good. If you’ve got the budget, go OLED. If longevity matters more, stick with LCD.

They Light Up Completely Differently

This is the fundamental difference.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) can’t produce light on its own. It needs a backlight panel behind it, and the liquid crystal layer controls how much light passes through — kind of like blinds controlling sunlight.

Heading Levels

Three levels is usually enough. Too many levels and the structure gets more confusing than helpful.

Text Formatting

The basic text styles:

Bold — use **text**
Italic — use *text*
~~Strikethrough~~ — use ~~text~~
Inline code — wrap it in backticks
Hyperlink — use [text](url)

You can mix these together, like bold with code inside or italic with a link.

Cover Image

That big image at the top of this post? That’s the cover image. Setting it up is dead simple — just add one line to your front matter:

cover: "images/demo01.jpg"

The cover image automatically gets a gradient overlay so your title text doesn’t get lost against the background. If you don’t want a cover image, just leave it as an empty string "".

How to Enable It

Add math: true to your front matter. That’s it. Spectra will load KaTeX automatically — no extra setup needed.

Inline Formulas

Wrap a formula in two $ signs and it shows up right in the middle of your text.

For example, Euler’s identity $e^{i\pi} + 1 = 0$ is often called the most beautiful equation in math. And $E = mc^2$ is probably the most famous physics formula out there.

The Basics: Syntax Highlighting

Just write the language name after the triple backticks, and Spectra will color things up for you. You’ll also get a language label and a copy button in the top-right corner.

Welcome. This is a blog built with the Spectra theme.

Spectra is a Hugo theme with a sci-fi aesthetic — in dark mode there’s a subtle glow effect, cards blur-to-focus as they scroll into view, and the overall vibe is clean with a hint of futurism.

Why “Spectra”

Spectra is the plural of spectrum, as in the spectrum of light. The name fits because the design revolves around light: accent glows on a dark background, gradient navigation bars, borders that light up on hover.
